John Clyde Spitler and Walter M. Johnson Scholarship Fund

The Illinois 4-H Foundation’s John Clyde Spitler and Walter M. Johnson Scholarship Fund (Spitler-Johnson Fund) seeks to support the involvement of Illinois 4-H members in camps or events that focus on leadership development, the Arts, or international exchange opportunities.

Requests for funds may be submitted to support Unit, multi-unit, regional, and state coordinated 4-H programs. Proposed funding should be for scholarships to offset registration expenses for 4-H members or travel expenses for 4-H members in national leadership positions. Spitler-Johnson applications will be accepted at any time during the 4-H program year to align with scholarship needs; however they should be submitted at least two weeks prior to an event or program deadline in order to be reviewed.

Application Format

Illinois 4-H Foundation Spitler-Johnson applications must be submitted online. Each topic must be addressed in order for the application to be considered for funding; proposals with parts missing will not be considered for funding. The application topics are:

  1. Focus of Experience
  2. Benefit for 4-H members
  3. Program Follow-up
  4. Program Timeline
  5. Proposal Summary
  6. Scholarship Recipient Selection Criteria (if applicable)
  7. Methods of Public Acknowledgement of Illinois 4-H Foundation Support
  8. Funding Request

Funds Usage

The Illinois 4-H Foundation Spitler-Johnson funds are to be used as scholarship monies for 4-H members to attend camps, conferences, or events that focus on leadership development, the Arts, or international exchange opportunities. Other subject matter focused programs may be considered when the scholarships are being used to support 4-H members who will be serving in county, Unit, or State leadership roles in that program area.

Repeat Funding

Counties, unit, regional, and State 4-H programs that have received Illinois 4-H Foundation Spitler-Johnson funding previously may re-submit a new application, however in order to be considered for repeat funding, they must have submitted the required follow-up documentation within 30 days after the event/activity.

Funding Cycle

Illinois 4-H Foundation John Clyde Spitler & Walter M. Johnson Scholarship applications will be accepted any time throughout the 4-H program year.

Funding Acceptance

A Funding Acceptance form must be completed and submitted to Sheila Powers in the State 4-H Office prior to the event for grant monies to be awarded.
