Livestock Scholarship

A $1000 scholarship for 4-H members.

Livestock Scholars are either seniors in high school or in an approved post-high school program (junior college, 4-year university, trade school, etc.) and a current 4-H member. Three years of 4-H enrollment in 4-H livestock projects and focus on an agricultural degree and career are required. Winners are chosen by the State 4-H Office and a selection committee.

Meet one of our winners

Megan Richter

Megan Richter is a 12-year 4-H member participating in both Leaf River Busy Beavers 4-H Club and Circle M 4-H Club in Ogle County. Megan competed in Horsebowl and Hippology and completed projects involving rabbits and horses throughout her 4-H career. Megan explains that she was most active in her horse projects due to her passion for horses at a young age.  Megan attended Texas A&M University and she plans on getting either a Master’s or Doctorate’s Degree in Equine Science so she can reach her ultimate career goal of becoming an Equine Science professor.

Nomination Process

Applications must be complete and include the following:

  • Completed front page of personal information
  • Maximum of FOUR (4) typed pages, single-sided, that provide answers to questions included in the application
  • TWO written recommendation letters, enclosed in sealed envelopes with the applicant’s name on the front of the envelope and signature of the persons providing the recommendations across the seal on the back of the envelope. One recommendation must be from a 4-H volunteer OR a University of Illinois Extension staff member; the second recommendation must be from a high school or college staff member OR an individual from your community. Recommendation letters should NOT be from individuals related to the applicant. Recommendation letters should focus on leadership demonstrated and community involvement of the applicant.
  • Complete contact information on individuals who wrote recommendation letters, including verification of 4-H enrollment
  • An official transcript from your high school and your post-high school educational program, if currently enrolled in such a program

Semi-finalists will be required to either participate in an interview or provide a self-made presentation on DVD. Final determination of the required procedures will be made by State 4-H Office after March 15. Interviews will only be conducted on specific dates as determined by the selection committee. Interviews will be videotaped for scoring by a selection committee at a later date.
